Revisiting Kettles Yard
Published by Jan Woodhouse in Art Exhibitions • 12/03/2011 12:02:38
An old friend of mine, Sue, who lives in Tasmania, is currently over here visiting her parents in Chatham. Yesterday we met in Cambridge, and I introduced her to one of my favourite places, Kettles Yard. It’s always good, seeing a place you love through someone else’s eyes. Sue doesn’t have a background in art; she said that what she liked about it was that it was a whole experience; there wasn’t the obligation to work your way around looking at individual art objects, like in a gallery. This is what Jim Ede intended: that each individual object was part of a whole. He was a believer in balance.

As for me, I found myself once again both calmed and invigorated; it’s so good in these times of information overload to return to somewhere where this is refreshingly absent. (Though the information is there if you ask for it.) After my moans and groans (blog post Feb 22) about a recent visit to Norwich Castle – this was such bliss.

A beautiful oasis, before a noisy train ride home. And, of course, catching up with the news of yesterday’s earthquake in Japan.

Questioning our right to call ourselves 'artist', etc. and does it matter.
