Turning Out

When I was a child, I used to dread being instructed by my mother to ‘turn out your drawers’ – by which she meant get rid of all the stuff I no longer needed. Occasionally though there was a reward, like the discovery of a Christmas postal order from an elderly aunt that had somehow slipped to the bottom of the drawer and been forgotten.
As the years have passed, I’ve come to find the process of ‘turning out’ strangely satisfying. Last week I applied the discipline to my files of digital photographs, deleting quite a drastic number of those that no longer interested me and that I considered a waste of space. In the process, I did in fact find the digital equivalent of the old postal orders: images I’d pretty much ignored at the time but which are actually quite pleasing. One of these is the picture (below) of a ginger cat against a similar coloured background, that I took in Marrakesh in 2007.
